TITLE PAGE
The First World Atlas of Football is a unique achievement. There are hundreds of books about championships and cups, and thousands of books about famous clubs and football stars, but there has never been a single atlas with a collection of maps devoted specifically to football. How many Czech works – not including fiction – can boast of being world premieres?

The authors of this book, Radovan Jelinek and Jiri Tomes are geographers, whose past work has included the very successful Atlas of the Contemporary World for schools. A number of prominent football journalists and dozens of correspondents from all corners of the globe co-operated on the creation of this new atlas of football.

The atlas, which is presented in this website, consists of four parts:
  • Global view
The first chapter of the book contains theme maps based on comparisons within regions and individual countries, and reflects the development, spread and significance of football on a global scale. The chapter also describes the conditions under which first-league football is played, i.e. stadiums and climate, but also features the money involved in the game, transfers and football tragedies.

  • International competitions
The second part of the atlas presents the cartographic history of all global competitions as well as championships in different continents.Other pages map out the history of cup competitions on a world scale. The most space has been devoted to the most significant, i.e. cups of league champions. In Europe, for example, the European Cup and its successor, the Champions League, and the Copa Libertadores, the most important club competition in South America. A number of maps are complemented with charts, which will be of great help to gamblers.

  • Domestic competitions
The third and most extensive section of the book is devoted to regional maps. Beautifully illustrated maps of all countries and territories of the world feature an exhaustive list of the clubs which have achieved their country's league title or cup, but also teams that play or have played in the highest league competitions.

  • Appendixes
The fourth part contains a list of champions, national cup holders in all countries as well as an extensive index. The index is compiled of all the football clubs (including towns) featured in the atlas with important characteristics, i.e. the full name of the club, an explanation of abbreviations, the year of foundation, and development of the club's name.

The First World Atlas of Football contains:
  • 128 map pages
  • 5 pages of emblems of football associations of all FIFA members complemented with flags
  • 4 pages (bookends) of emblems of the most famous football clubs
  • historical overview of all winners of national competitions – leagues and cups of all countries and territories of the world (altogether 25 pages and approx. 15000 winners)
  • index of all featured football clubs and towns (altogether 30000 entries)

We welcome and appreciate any comments which could lead to the improvement of the atlas and especially information which would help us remove the white spaces or shortcomings that are a normal occurrence in any atlas or encyclopaedic work, especially in its first issue.
